The Soundport

The soundport is nothing more than a hole in the side, aimed at the player's ear. I learned about it from Linda Manzer and her "Blue Absynthe" guitar made for Scott Chinery and the Blue Guitar collection.Others, including Robert Ruck, have used similar ideas.

The soundport gives the player more volume and more of the sound that the audience hears — it's a natural monitor. It's almost like being in front of the guitar even as you play it! Does it change the tone of the guitar? Seems not to. I can cover the port while the guitar is played and cannot hear a difference from the front.
