2002 Birdseye Maple Sprite
![]()
The cutest little Sprite!
Made in 2003 for the Healdsburg Guitar Festival, it sold immediately. The customer later regretfully traded it in
for a custom Ought-3 but I was happy to have it back!
I gave it to my mother, who was really upset that I sold it instead of giving it to her in the first place.
It lived in its case for the last several years except when it was brought out to impress visitors.
I trued the fingerboard, refretted it (it had little wear but I wanted it to be like new), cleaned and polished it. It is like new in all respects:
no scratches, dings, or wear.
The Vermont birdseye maple sides and back are outstanding lots of eyes and character. Top is Adirondack red spruce, with good tight grain
and lots of "silk." The rosette is black/white/blue with a paua abalone center ring. Binding, fingerboard, and bridge are ebony;
the neck is mahogany with a maple center.There are maple leaves at the 3rd, 5th, and 7th frets, and the Running Dog at the 9th.
The headstock inlay is a complex hummingbird (bird's eyes, you see ...) flitting over the maple overlay.
Tonally, it's a sweet, crystalline, loud little bird. It's fun to play with fingers and really jumps out when flatpicked.
A real sweetheart to play either alone or as a harmony instrument.
